Embrace the Season: Perfect East Coast Fall Activities

If you're looking to squeeze in some last-minute travel before the year ends, you're not alone! I've been exploring destinations myself for a quick getaway. However, as someone from Connecticut, I can confidently say that fall is one of my favorite seasons, and Connecticut is one of the most beautiful states to visit during this time of year. There's something truly magical about fall in New England.

Below, you’ll find my curated list of fall activities across Connecticut, New York, and the DMV area (places I've called home). For those who might not be familiar, DMV stands for D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. Even if you can't take a trip, consider trying out some of the activities listed below!

My Favorite Wineries / Would Recommend

  • Hawk Ridge Winery (CT): Family owned winery located at 28 Plungis Road, Watertown, CT. There's both indoor and outdoor seating available. If you're visiting with a group or planning a date night, consider bringing your own foldable chairs or a blanket for a cozy spot on the grass. You’re welcome to bring your own food (picnic style) as long as it’s not catered. The atmosphere is great—I truly enjoyed my visit!

  • Spring Hill Vineyard (CT): Located at 292 Bee Brook Road, New Preston, CT. This family-owned spot is open from 12-6 on weekends through October. Keep in mind that they have a strict policy regarding what’s not allowed on the premises, including outside food or beverages, coolers, speakers, lawn games, tents, chairs, balloons, and other decorations.

  • Crimson Lane Vineyards (VA): Located at 13334 Crimson Ln, Linden, VA. One thing to note about this winery is that reservations are required, and they cannot accommodate parties larger than six. If your group exceeds this size, you can contact the winery staff directly through their website to arrange a private booking. Unlike many other wineries that allow leashed dogs, this one does not. They offer bookable experiences starting at $45 per person.

  • 50 West Vineyards (VA): Located at 39060 Little River Turnpike, Middleburg VA. Offering stunning views of Bull Run Mountain range. For this vineyard, reservations are encouraged, but not required for groups of 8 or less.

  • Old West Minister Winery (MD): Located at 1550 Old Westminster Road, Westminster, MD. Keep in mind that reservations are required. You can reserve here.

Favorite Fall Activities in the Tri-State area

  • The Big E (MA): If you've never experienced the Big E, you should definitely add this fall activity to your list. Held annually in mid-September, it’s one of the largest fairs in the Northeast. The Big E offers a super fun, family-friendly atmosphere. For adults, ticket prices vary, but you can find one-day passes for as low as $16.

  • Lake Compounce (CT): Phantom Fall Fest returns this year from September 21 - October 27, 2024. If you’re into horror and screams, this is the spot for you - also family friendly!

  • Silverman’s Farm (CT): Fall Fest is an annual tradition at Silverman’s, offering pumpkin picking, apple picking, fresh baked pies, and scenic tractor rides.

  • Cityside Pumpkin Patch (NYC): NYC isn’t my top place for fall activities, but Citywide Pumpkin Patch is a fall activity that is on my list this year.

  • SUMMIT ONE Vanderbilt (NYC): A breathtaking experience with serene views of NYC. This can be a year round activity, the views during the day are nice, but nothing beats the night views. Book your experience here.

  • Central Park (NYC): This activity is FREE. If you’ve never been to Central Park, this is really an all year round popular destination. But there is something truly special about strolling down Central Park during the fall months.

I hope this list of fall activities was helpful, especially if you’re located in the CT, NYC, or DMV areas. Wineries definitely win for my favorite fall activity. Comment below and let me know your top fall activities.
